On March 20, 2018, the last male northern white rhinoceros “Sudan” on Earth died in Kenya. The remaining Najin and her child Fatu became the last two female northern white rhinoceros on the planet. Regrettably, they currently lose fertility. Recording Sudan and the decline of the species is an important project for National Geographic photographer Ami Vitale. “Now we are witnessing the extinction of a species that has been going through millions of years but cannot survive,” Vitale shared on Instagram.
