Ambergris is the secretion of the intestinal whale of the sperm whale. It has a strong odor and is waxy and often floats in the tropical sea. The purpose of the whale’s secretion of ambergris is to protect the intestines from the sharp bones of the swallowed squid (a marine mollusc like a squid).
Ambergris is used as a perfume in perfumes to extend the life of perfumes. Also used as a seasoning for food and beverages. Today, ambergris can be made synthetically and used by the perfume industry. The perfume industry has now automatically refused to buy natural ambergris to protect sperm whales from being overkilled.
