Black toothpaste is a toothpaste brand that is widely loved by the public. At first glance, it is a foreign brand. However, in fact, black toothpaste is an authentic Chinese brand.


In the 1930s, the brothers Yan Yanlin and Yan Zhongli of Ningbo founded Haolai Medicine (the predecessor of Haolai Chemical) during the period of the British Concession in Shanghai. Based on the Baiyu toothpaste formula of the China Chemical Industry Society, a new toothpaste, the “black”, was brought out. The domestic toothpaste brand is officially on the stage of history.

The toothpaste is named “Black”. It was originally black Africans because of their dark complexion, and their teeth appeared extremely white. Later, its advertisement stated that the black toothpaste formula contained a dentifrice from a tree in Africa, and used it to publicize it.

With the “mysterious” and unique double mint formula and refreshing taste, black toothpaste quickly became popular in Shanghai as soon as it was launched, and became the first choice of daily necessities for residents of Shanghai.

In the 1940s, black brands moved to Hong Kong, Taiwan and other regions, and the sales network quickly expanded to Southeast Asia. Especially in Taiwan, with its unique product formula, it has successfully made black brands the leading brand in the local toothpaste market for decades.

It once defeated Colgate, the world’s toothpaste dominator, in the Southeast Asian market. So far, its share of 20% to 40% in the Southeast Asian market has not been surpassed by the latter.

It is reported that because black toothpaste is restricted from being exported because of racial discrimination, black people have upgraded their brand English names and trademark avatars. Since then, black people have focused more on internationalization.

In 1995, the well-known black brands in the Southeast Asian market and Hong Kong and Taiwan chose to return to mainland China and plan to build a global production base in Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province.

However, contrary to the fact that black toothpaste belongs to Chinese brands, the Chinese toothpaste was established in 1954 and was invested and leased by Unilever Technology in the UK / Netherlands in 1994. The current Chinese toothpaste brand is owned by Unilever.
