In accordance with the resolution adopted at the 10th session of the ninth congress of Viet nam on 6 November 1996, the following eight provinces of Viet nam were divided into 15 provinces and 1 central municipality.
Vietnam divided the former hebei province into beijiang province and beining province. The capital was set in beijiang city and beining city of the same name. The former nanhe province is divided into nanding province and henan province. The capital is set in nanding city and fuli city respectively. The original yongfu province was divided into yongfu province and fushou province. The capital was set in yongan city and yuechi city respectively. The former quang nam – da nang province is divided into quang nam province and da nang city. The capital of quang nam province is sanqi city. The former xiaohe province is divided into pingyang province and pingfu province. The capitals are located in tulongmu city and luning city respectively. The former Ming hai province is divided into bo liao province and jin ou province, and the capital is set in bo liao city and jin ou city of the same name.
So far, from January 1, 1997, the first-level administrative region of Vietnam is divided into 57 provinces and 4 central municipalities.
