In general, toe rings are only used by married women because they are believed to regulate the menstrual cycle and are therefore good for health, as the slight pressure on the second toe ensures uterine health and therefore increases the chance of conception.
Unmarried Hindu girls also wear a toe ring on the third toe, which they think can reduce dysmenorrhea.
