In 800 AD, Charlie was crowned the “Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire” by the Pope. He had made the Frankish kingdom a great empire that controlled most of Western Europe through more than fifty wars: the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Danube to the east, and the North Sea to the north. To central Italy, it covers almost all the land of the Western Roman Empire. Since the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, Western Europe has never seen such a huge country!

In 843 AD, shortly after Charlie’s death, his three grandchildren divided the empire in the Treaty of Verdun, and the empire was divided into three, becoming the prototype of three European countries in the future – France, Germany, Italy.
