Sleep is not to stop the brain to rest to restore the vitality of the brain, but to supply a large amount of ATP energy in the brain at the beginning of sleep.
The increased energy is used throughout the night to create and rearrange the connections between neurons, so while some brain areas may be less active during sleep, the brain consumes more energy overall than when it is awake.
